The disease typically affects people in their 40s, and 90% of the patients are women. The Sjögren’s Foundation has developed clinical practice guidelines for healthcare providers to improve the diagnosis, evaluation, and care of Sjögren’s syndrome patients with lung manifestations. The guidelines, which include 52 recommendations for Sjögren’s evaluation and management in “An important way in which the Foundation strives for change is to promote innovative research that will have the greatest impact on the lives of those who have this prevalent and devastating disease.” Two different Sjogren’s Foundation grants are available: the $75,000 High Impact Research Award, and the $25,000 Pilot Research Award.

The Sjögren’s Syndrome Foundation is an international, non-profit organization founded in 1983 to serve the needs of people affected by Sjögren’s syndrome. Sjögren’s syndrome, a disorder of unknown cause, is characterized by deficient moisture production of the mucous-secreting glands, particularly the tear ducts of the eyes (lacrimal) and the salivary glands of the mouth.

Lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, infiltrate and destroy these glands causing decreased production of saliva and tears. Sjögren's syndrome (SjS, SS) is a long-term autoimmune disease that affects the body's moisture-producing (lacrimal and salivary) glands, and often seriously affects other organs systems, such as the lungs, kidneys, and nervous system. Primary symptoms are dryness (dry mouth and dry eyes), pain and fatigue. Backed with up-to-date knowledge, it is possible to advocate for care and educate health care providers when needed.
