Providing a description and analysis of the unusual characteristics of Asperger's syndrome, with strategies to reduce those that are most conspicuous and debilitating, this guide brings together the most relevant and useful information on all aspects of the syndrome, from language and social behaviour to motor clumsiness.

The story of Hans Asperger, Nazism, murdered children, post-war oblivion, the birth of the diagnosis in the 1980s, the gradual expansion of the diagnostic criteria and the huge recent interest in autism spectrum disorders exemplify the historical and volatile nature of diagnoses: they are historic constructs that reflect the times and societies where they exert their effect. Edition 1st Edition. Hans Asperger (1906-1980) was a Viennese physician who published the first definition of Asperger's syndrome in 1944. He identified a pattern of behavior and abilities that included "a lack of empathy, little ability to form friendships, one-sided conversation, intense absorption in a special interest, and clumsy movements." The case of Hans Asperger provides a troubling example of the horror that can be unleashed when medical professionals allow themselves to become complicit with a brutal ideology." The editorial also discusses a new book by Edith Sheffer entitled “Asperger’s Children: The origins of autism in Nazi Vienna” which covers similar evidence. After a long, distinguished career as a practicing psychologist and medical specialist, Hans Asperger, professor of psychology at Vienna University, died in 1980.

All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome, by Kathy Hoopmann This one is kind of an odd entry in the list, but nonetheless incredibly useful and brilliant in its own way. Unlike Kanner, Hans Asperger's findings were ignored and disregarded in the English-speaking world in his lifetime. Finally, from the early 1990s, his findings began to gain notice, and nowadays Asperger's Syndrome is recognized as a condition in a large part of the world.
